St. Lucia – a tropical gem of the Caribbean with its lush rainforest, the world’s only drive-in volcano, beautiful white and black sand beaches, and its famous landmark, the majestic twin peaks – The Pitons-. Gros Piton and Petit Piton rising 2,619 ft and 2,438 ft above sea level respectively are two mountainous volcanic plugs located in Soufriere.
At the base of Gros Piton is a small community called Fonds Gen Libre meaning Valley of the Free People where you can meet with your guide to begin your ascent of the mountain. The hike typically takes about four hours including your way back. At each quarter, there’s a bench for hikers to catch their breath, sip on some water, or just ask any questions. At the halfway make, you will have the chance to capture some incredible shots of Petit Piton. Many exotic plants and animals call this place home.
Your aching muscles will be well worthwhile when you finally reach the summit. The view is just simply remarkable! Take in stunning views of the deep blue Caribbean Sea, the town of Vieux Fort, the Maria Islands, and neighboring island St. Vincent. After the hike, enjoy a cool swim to help loosen your tense muscles or a scrumptious local lunch.
